( He sure is struggling like the wild pup he is, trying to break free. And when that doesn't work, he sure is going to just try to shove Doudanuki over so he can slam on top of him because clearly the only way they can really communicate is by scrapping. )

[UGH HOLD STILL. Doudanuki struggles, but his center of gravity is off because he's been holding onto Mutsu's head. Over they go and onto the ground and oh look, time to fight!!

Doudanuki snarls and lets Mutsunokami's neck go in favor of trying to grab at his clothes and throw him off.]

( Perfect. Just perfet.

As soon as his neck is free, he's throwing himself on top of Doudanuki properly. It's made a little easier when he grabs onto his clothes the way he does and honestly, it's... really easy? It's a little too easy and that's probably why he ends up with his face right in his and...

Yeah, he sure did fall and land on Doudanuki's face. With his lips. It isn't exactly graceful either because there's definitely some teeth there and he probably missed most of his mouth as he just slams right into his face. )

[Wait, what? What?

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

They went from fighting to Mutsu smashing his face against Doudanuki's? But it's less a headbutt and more a facebutt with lips? He can't even pull his head back to look at Mutsu and ask what the hell just happened because he's pressed against the floor.

Which...

Wait.

Wait??

WAIT?

Doudanuki wrestles a hand free and pushes it against Mutsu's cheek to turn his face away.]

Did you just try to kiss me?

[Try and semi-fail semi-succeed?]

( That sure is a faceful of hand. With his face turned the other cheek, it's a little hard to tell for sure but it definitely looks like Mutsu has a frustrated but accomplished grin on his face. It's a little coy, honestly.

But he doesn't answer Doudanuki! Instead, he's quiet, just looking like a smug punk like I DUNNO WHAT DO YOU THINK?! )

[What does he think? HE THINKS MUTSUNOKAMI YOSHIYUKI IS A PUNK, THAT'S WHAT HE THINKS.

Doudanuki's incredulity gives way to his usual anger for a brief second, until he remembers that the best way to get back at Mutsu is to do the unexpected. This punk thinks he's got the best of him? WELL??

Okay, he does, but! Still!

He lets out a frustrated growl, before deciding it's better to just beat Mutsu at this game of his and win than to look dumb for even a second longer. He lets go of the other sword's face, snaking his hand behind his head and pulling him back.]

That's not how you do it.

[And even if he has 0 experience with this, he at least knows you don't use teeth. So here, Mutsu, if you wanted a kiss, now you get a kiss.]

( He sure does feel like a winner right now. A smug smug smug winner. )

( He's ready to headbutt Doudanuki back except

this sure isn't a headbutt )

( THIS SURE IS A FACE FULL OF DOUDANUKI AND NOT AT ALL WHAT HE EXPECTED EVER AND-- )

[There, see? Now there's a reason to be smug. He lets Mutsunokami go and then pushes himself up onto his elbows.

He thought the other sword would eventually call uncle and give in. And while he's feeling something weird like disappointment(? maybe?) at having Mutsunokami run, he'll just shrug it off like he didn't just straight up kiss him. Because it wasn't anything! Duh!!! Doudanuki Masakuni does not have feelings. SHUT UP.

So now who gets to be smug? THIS GUY.]

( As soon as he's free, he's rolling away, sitting cross-legged and holding his face. He sure is covering his mouth right now which is probably the one thing keeping him from actually screaming and having the citadel run over to investigate. )

What was that?!

( He looks completely on edge right now. His cowlicks seem to be standing up and that fake tail of his may have bristled and )

( His face feels warm and he's smiling behind his hand and those sure are petals in his hair right now. )

[Does Mutsu see this casual af shrug that Doudanuki just gave? Because it was casual af even if he's secretly screaming that exact same thing inside.]

What d'you think it was?

[It was him beating Mutsunokami at his own dumb game, that's what!

It's also kind of cute how his hair is fuzzed up like an angry cat, and--

Even if Doudanuki is acting like he doesn't care, Mutsu is the opposite and it's clear he cares a lot right now. )

( Mouth still covered so sorry if he sounds really muffled, )

[Okay so. Doudanuki is usually pretty thick about most things. He never really pays attention to anything that doesn't immediately relate to war. But even he can tell that Mutsu isn't just laughing this and actually cares about his answer.

Unfortunately, he can't really hear the question. He considers it for a moment, but decided that he can't give a half-assed answer just because he couldn't hear.

So he sits up and crosses his legs, then leans over and pulls Mutsu's hand down.]

Don't think I bit you, so put your hand down an' talk t'me.

( This really isn't how he expected any of this going. He's normally better at thinking on his feet too so you'd think Mutsu would be able to improvise right now but anyone who knows Mutsu well knows that he's prone to being flustered and shy when something focuses on himself too much. He's just a humble sword and as proud as he is, he really doesn't think much of himself.

So when Doudanuki pulls his hand away, he'll be able to see just a trace of a smile on his face before it gives way to more surprise. His mouth hangs open some like he has something to say but the words are stuck in his throat.

Mutsu is shy but he isn't the type to let it hold him back for longer than necessary though so the next thing that happens is he leans closer to, looking straight at Doudanuki and asks, )

What'd ya think?

( The answer matters to him and for all of his playful joking around earlier, he wants a serious answer now. )

[Huh.

It takes him a moment to respond just because he hadn't been expecting to see that smile behind Mutsu's hand. It makes him realize that this is serious and that Mutsu, for whatever reason, might be serious about all this. It also makes him realize what had been going on all day. Mutsu following him everywhere, watching him, smiling at him, bothering him... It's what he's seen other swords doing to those they found important, or even precious. He's never understood it himself because he'd never been precious to anyone before. And yet here was Mutsunokami, shy and serious for once like Doudanuki's answer really, really mattered.

And that makes his entire face start to burn. He has no idea what to do in this situation. What if he's wrong? Would Mutsu joke about this? No, probably not, but Doudanuki had no experience in this. What if he's just reading too much into that earnest and hopeful look on his comrade's face?

It's Doudanuki's turn to be flustered, and he turns away to hide the very obvious blush creeping across his cheeks. When he speaks, his voice is lacking its usual gruff anger.]

I-It wasn't so b-bad bad, I guess.

But next time, uh, don't smash your face into mine like you're trying to break it.

( Honestly, he's been doing it for a little while now but it was only recently that he decided to push how far he could go. And now, he's decided to get right to the matter and he waits patiently for Doudanuki to answer. He can see the blush creeping across his face and he can feel his heart warm and swell as he starts to hope. )

'S not like I wanted to do it that way.

( He's never really had a chance until now. Or rather, he's had a few opportunities but he'd always let them pass out of shyness. Because what if Doudanuki didn't like him too? But now he knows and he reaches to grab one of Doudanuki's hands, )

Hey, look at me when I'm talkin` to ya.

( Because there are a lot of things he wants to say. )

[If Mutsu had been doing it to him all year, he wouldn't have noticed anything more than "this guy is around me a lot." It was one of guys greatest shortcomings, not noticing others outside of battle or sparring. The idea of companionship was so foreign to him.

Which is why he is still looking away even if he lets Mutsu take his hand.]

I'm listening.

[Don't ask him to look right now. He can't. His entire face us going beat red.]

( Maybe not all year. It'd started off friendly and normal enough! He liked hanging out with Doudanuki at first. He was fun to tease and he didn't have to be careful around him like certain other guys. But at some point, things had changed and he isn't exactly sure when but that doesn't really matter.

And if Doudanuki won't look at him then that's okay. he didn't really have anything he wanted to say just yet anyway. If it was anyone else, he'd probably be more gentle but one of the reasons why he likes Doudanuki so much is because he isn't someone he has to be careful around. He can be himself and it's okay to be a little more aggressive, right? But he isn't sure because he's never quite seen Doudanuki like this either. It's kind of cute, really, though, he doesn't say as much out loud.

With a strong squeeze of the hand, he tugs Doudanuki and moves in so their faces are close, )

I wanna do it right.

( But Doudanuki won't look at him and he isn't going to be that pushy about it so he comes in to kiss him on the cheek. See? No teeth. But he can feel how warm his face is right now and he can't help but smile against it. He didn't think Doudanuki could be this cute and it makes him like him even more. )

[What is affection???? Seriously, he thought that this was supposed to be something wholly pleasant and yet here he is thinking he's about to burn to ash from how hot his face suddenly got. He likes it though. The feeling of being touched and the fact that it's Mutsunokami kissing his cheek. It's - dare he say it? - cute in how innocent it is, how sweet and honest.

He's never really thought of anyone as cute before, but the way Mutsu draws closer and pulls him in is just that. And gods be damned if he doesn't like the way Mutsu's hand feels against his and the way his lips feel. He thought he just liked Mutsu's presence, but he realises that over time he had stopped being as pushy with him, as guarded. He realises that he didn't act this way around most of the others, and while he was annoyed at being followed around, he'd tolerated it so long specifically because it had been Mutsunokami doing it. Would he have tolerated the old man? Jiroutachi? Even the tanto?

And there his face lights up again, redder than before.

He actually likes him. He likes Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, even with how annoying he can be sometimes. Especially because of how annoying he can be.]

If you're going to do it right, then do it right.

[He can't be anything but what he is - direct, a little rough around the edges, and extremely bad at the usual social graces. He turns around and presses his lips against Mutsu's again, reaching up with his free hand to grip his clothes and pull him in.]

( It's a surprise because he's never expected Doudanuki to be this affectionate. It isn't surprising that he's taken the initiative to go for the kiss Mutsu had tried to be polite about and he loves it. He loves it so much that when he feels his lips on his, he manages a quick laugh before returning the kiss gladly and throwing his arms around him--

Honestly, he throws all of himself on top of Doudanuki because as perfect as everything is, Mutsu is a giant labrador that thinks he's still a tiny puppy and he's so happy he can't contain himself and he just has to throw himself at Doudanuki.

Meanwhile, that sure is a flurry of cherry blossoms just spilling all over the place around them. )
